It is always the little sounds that you must listen out for, the small noises that can mean the difference between victory and defeat; life and death. Often these sounds are hard to hear, hard to act on; but then that is what makes survivors so. Plainly the thirty Ostarian dog soldiers of the No 18 Regiment were not survivors, perhaps they were not even real soldiers, or so it seemed to the two dozen Leporidae Carabiniers of the 1st elite company. Certainly the Ostarians were making a lot of noise, growling in laughter as they pawed in good natured rough and tumble with their new recruits, tails wagging, unaware that they were being watched.
The hamlet of Tripezig was on the road of the general Ferach advance and it had to be taken quickly and held so that the Elven battalions could march onwards to battle without delay. While most of the No 18 Regiment was settled in line three deep across the dirt road into the hamlet, these soldiers had been assign guard duty of the meager arms depot within a rough tavern.
Laying flat on their chests the Rabbit Carabiniers intended to take down the Ostarians with one volley, timed to begin with the opening shots of the Elf attack on the main Dog force that was behind them on the road.
Any moment now....
A crackle of musketry announced the Armorican attack on the No 18 Regiment. The Dog soldiers pricked their ears and right on queue all faced towards the distant sound; away from the hidden Carabiniers.
Now!
Two dozen rifles cracked almost in unison, spinning leaden balls struck almost all the Dogs in their backs and legs, a few furred heads split from the force of the impact. The few remaining wounded Ostarians were dispatched with pistol shot and bayonets, their white uniforms crimson.
The hamlet was secured, but that was only the start, the Rabbits of the 1st Company reloaded their rifles and ran so that they could draw aim on the rear of the main Dog force. Time to shoot more enemies in the back.
Background in the World of Valon
Of the two types of Rabbits in the Burrovian Republique it is the smaller Rabbits that make up the majority of Light Infantry in the field. On the battlefields of Urop and in the Witchlands the Jagers, Voltiguers and Carabiniers of the Burrovian Light Troops fan out ahead of the main body of troops to engage enemy skirmishers. They are very effective in this task.
Uniform Details
The uniform of a typical Rabbit Light Troop consists of a green tunic, brown breeches and a black shako. Facing colours are yellow as is the plume on their shakos. Braiding is gold. Equipment is black and equipment straps are brown leather.
