On the wide plains of Krautia news travels fast when danger approaches and the villages bar their doors and lock their windows when the Ferach Empire is on the advance.

In the town of Castlemein the Krautian 3rd division had arrayed itself in front of the town as news reached the waiting infantry, mainly landwehr in their first years of service, that the columns of the Elves were drawing into view.
They were confident of success, they had the walls of the town and its open gates at their backs, they had packed their ranks thick shoulder to shoulder. None would pass then and gain the town and the concentrated volleys of several thousand Dwarf MkI muskets would decimate any infantry who marched upon them. Sure enough from the forests ahead and the narrow rutted road that led to the gates of Castlemein came the columns of the Ferach Empire. The Dwarves grinned and even cheered as their officers raced along their lines on sweating pink pummilig pigs, shouted out that they faced only the soldiers of Nepolise and traitor Dwarves of the Nain Legion.

Victory was assured, the Dwarves were a match for the Legion and none put faith in the skills of the packed ranks of the Todoroni militia that accompanied them. There are a lot of Todoroni and they advanced in a great square formation, slowly with huge flags and banner waving all across the frontage of the formation. On they came, and the Krautian troops waited, neither side had artillery to hand or cavalry, so this would be a straight firefight where the defenders in their lines would have the advantage. The massive Todoroni square halted just beyond the range of the Dwarves muskets, their banners waving. Along side them the Legion de Nain Dwarves formed a line three deep and prepared to advance.

The Krautians jeered and booed the Toads, assuming them cowards as they stood and appeared to be hesitating before advancing.

It was then that the reason for the Todoroni formation and their masses of gaudy flags became evident to the defenders. As the Legion soldiers opened the ball with several volleys, which while only felling a few Krautians at this extreme range; the Todoroni parted and the cavalry hidden within rode out. As the newly unformed landwehr began to raggedly return the fire of the Legion, their attention on the enemy Dwarves, their officers screamed at them to fix bayonets and for front ranks to knee for cavalry. It was no use.

The distraction of the Legion de Nain allowed the eight squadrons of Burrovian Cuirassiers to reach a gallop with nearly no casualties in their ranks. Iron helms and swords shone in the afternoon sun and the long ears of the Rabbitmen flapped in the wind as they lowered their blades and crashed into the Krautian ranks.

Heavy swords hacked down and the donkeys of the Cuirassiers kicked and bit as they hammered into the landwehr. It was a massacre, with crowded lines and no wide spaces to retreat into the Burrovians with blood coating them reached the open gates of Castlemein before the defenders could escape.

With a smile the Toad General in charge of the Ferach force lit a cheroot and smoked idly as his troops crocked with joy watching the Burrovians rolling up the flanks of the now fleeing Krautians.
