They met only when the ancient deck was placed upon the sacred table. A crowd of the most noble and famous watched on. Five queens, bound to that table but never to the same fate. When the cards were laid out the air thickened and the five stepped from the pasteboards into the world rite large and alive.
The Queen of Hearts first, crown bright, spear tipped with a golden heart. She smiled as if every soul in the room already loved her. “Fortune favours the bold,” she said. Men and women alike leaned toward her without knowing why. Unable to stop themselves. The Queen of Diamonds followed, gown heavy with gold thread, shield flashing like cut gemstones. She counted the coins in the room, the rings on all fingers, the value of every glance. “Everything has a price,” she murmured. “Even loyalty. Especially loyalty.”
Then the Queen of Spades, iron and shadow, sword in one hand and the black staff in the other. She did not smile. She simply stood where the light was thinnest and waited. Those who looked too long at her felt the weight of a grave already dug in cold soil. The Queen of Clubs burst in last of the four. Leaves clinging to her skirt and club raised as if she had just torn it from a living tree. “The wild does not ask permission,” she laughed and the flowers in the room leaned toward her like subjects.
They might have drawn blades then and there. Heart against diamond and club against spade had the fifth not appeared. The final queen tumbled out of nothing, bells jingling, motley bright, the jester’s staff spinning in her fingers. She bowed so low her cap swept the floor. “Ladies,” she cried, “you have forgotten the most important rule of the game.” The four queens turned as one.
“There is always a joker,” said the Queen of Fools with an expansive grin….
